We're All About the Stories

Everyone enjoys a good story and the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is a major regional attraction for bringing the area stories alive!

Our friendly staff help you find much more than just terrain! Be a part of the history, retrace routes of the native peoples, old voyageurs, immigrants, or the fur traders' far flung travels along our rivers and lakes.

Our spectacular exhibits tell stories reminiscent of the culture of the Lake Superior Region - the lore, jokes, riddles, music, and more!

Visitors find a unique blend of history, natural resources, and visitor information at the Center.
Planning to be in the Lake Superior area? Make the Center your first stop for your next family vacation!

Let us help you plan your stay while you're in the area! Looking for a secluded campsite? Just the right trail to explore? The best way to tour the Apostle Islands? Where to stay in the area? We are specialists in providing visitor information!

The Center features a regional History Center and Archives, gift shop, art gallery, theater, and a five-story observation tower offering a panoramic view of Lake Superior and the Apostle Islands Region. Hike our trails! We have a 3/4 mile boardwalk interpretive trail that's not to be missed! Your cost is only time well spent!

Our History

Local citizens initiated the project of the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. The Friends of the Center, a grass roots, non-profit organization formed to support the goals of a new Center, lobbied the state and federal governments for nearly six years and obtained state and federal funds to build this Center. Construction began in 1995.

The Center opened in May 1998, combining elements of history, natural resources, and visitor information under one roof. The Center operates through a unique federal, state and local partnership.
